Waterloo Region Upcycling and Mending Project from WR Environmental Grant

Waste-to-Wares

Textile donations that create employment for newcomer women.

Your old jeans, bedsheets and curtains can become something new. Drop off your unused fabrics with Basadi Sewing, and our team of newcomer women will turn them into beautiful, handmade products. Help us keep 100 kg of textiles out of the landfill by the end of 2026!

What we accept

Fabrics: denim, cotton, chino, canvas, muslin, silk, tencel and gabardine.

Items: clothing, bedsheets, curtains and tablecloths made from the fabrics above.

What we can't accept

Socks, undergarments, caps and hats, knits and sweaters, chiffon, polyester clothing, and baby or children's clothing.

Not sure? Check the label. If it lists one of the fabrics we accept, bring it in.

Basadi Sewing Women in Waterloo Region

Why it Matters

Much of the clothing and fabric we throw away is still full of life. At the same time, many newcomer women in Waterloo Region bring years of sewing and tailoring experience but face barriers to work in Canada. Waste-to-Wares connects the two: your donations supply the materials, and the women of Basadi Sewing are paid for the skilled work of remaking them.

What happens to your donation?

01
We sort and weigh it. Every kilogram counts toward our 100 kg goal.

02
Our team transforms it. Skilled newcomer women repair, cut and sew your fabrics into new products.

03
It finds a new home. We sell the finished pieces to local shoppers and businesses, keeping good fabric in use and out of the landfill.
